ABSTRACT

PURPOSE

This paper assesses the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing sustainable procurement practices among emerging construction companies in Gauteng, contributing to the advancement of Construction 5.0.

DESIGN / METHODOLOGY

A mono-quantitative research method was employed, using an electronic survey questionnaire distributed to senior management and directors of emerging companies in the construction sector in Gauteng.

FINDINGS

The study found that AI improves procurement efficiency, transparency, and sustainability, supporting emerging companies in aligning with Construction 5.0 principles. However, its adoption remains limited due to the perceived costs involved, limited technological skills, high complexity levels of the technology, and the lack of government support and policies that promote its integration and usage in procurement systems.

RESEARCH LIMITATIONS

The research is limited to emerging companies in Gauteng and relies on self-reported survey data, which may affect generalisability.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS

Findings provide a practical foundation for construction sector key players seeking to implement AI-driven sustainable procurement strategies.

ORIGINALITY / VALUE

The paper will contribute to the limited body of knowledge on AI-driven sustainable procurement in emerging construction firms within the South African context, particularly in the transition towards Construction 5.0.
