ABSTRACT

PURPOSE

The study aims to appraise gig workforce resourcing in the technological era, with a view to providing a strategic guide for non-standard employment resourcing.

DESIGN / METHODOLOGY

This study adopts a qualitative approach based on a review of existing literature from databases such as Google Scholar, Scopus. Thematic analysis was adopted for the study, while the theoretical framework adopted for the study was the Resource-based view theory.

FINDINGS & VALUE

The study revealed that the meaning of resourcing has transcended from the traditional approach focused on conventional employment relationships to a more nuanced definition encompassing a diverse employment relationship. The study revealed that the purposes of resourcing are to help meet the strategic and operational needs of organizations. The study also revealed that some of the strategies of resourcing will apply not only to full-time workers but also to gig workers, among which includes Build, Buy, Borrow, Bind, and Bounce. The study further revealed that some of the gig workforce resourcing strategies are; stretch work, global accessibility of gigs, organizing, compensation and benefits tied to requester fees, etc. This study contributes empirically and theoretically to the future workforce management in the technological era.

RESEARCH LIMITATIONS

This study is based solely on secondary data sources; future research could be carried out based on primary data sources to strengthen this study further.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATION

The findings offer practical insights for organizations aiming to align their workforce resourcing strategies with technological advancements. Employers can utilise the suggested strategies to address both strategic and operational requirements while efficiently managing the expanding workforce in a rapidly changing labour market.

ORIGINALITY / VALUE

This study provides a novel approach to gig workforce resourcing for organizations which the traditional resourcing strategies might not effectively address.
